DEL MAR, CA, SEPTEMBER 30, 2019, — Surf Cup Sports, LLC has partnered with Olivenhain Municipal Water District (OMWD) to start providing recycled water to Surf Sports Park’s grass sports fields. By irrigating approximately 55 acres with recycled water, Surf Cup Sports will save up to an estimated 100 million gallons of potable water per year, reducing potable water demand and improving sustainability.
Surf Cup Sports operates land owned by the City of San Diego that is used for the most pristine soccer and athletic fields in the nation. While Surf’s mission is to create the best experiences and opportunities for kids, Surf embraces their role as stewards of this precious land. Over the last year Surf has invested more than $2 million into the property to promote sustainability efforts and reduce water usage. To make the conversion to recycled water, Surf Cup Sports constructed a new on-site irrigation system including a pump station, transmission pipeline, and irrigation laterals.
The investment into the property is crucial to Surf’s mission. Surf Cup’s tournaments not only showcase the best youth soccer teams in the nation but are major economic generators for the San Diego region, and require a reliable source of water for irrigation. Last year, Surf’s tournaments drew over 200,000 soccer players and their families from all over the US and internationally, generating an estimated annual impact of $185 million.
